Mayreau from Saline Bay |

Mayreau Sunshine Band |
We started with a short hike to a deserted beach just over the ridge from Saline Bay, where we were anchored. Beth and I had the entire beach to ourselves the whole morning. After lunch on the ship, we hiked through town and over the crest of the island to Salt Whistle Bay. We spent most of the afternoon there just enjoying the beach and the solitude (we weren't the only ones on this beach, but there were only about a dozen other people in sight). I spent a short time snorkeling back in Saline Bay before heading back to the ship. The pictures above show that the people of Mayreau are in the process of building a generator station for the entire island (on the right side of the first 2 images). We also noticed that they had done quite a lot of cleanup in and around the town, on our previous visits we had always been struck by the fact that they seemed to use the hillside as a dumping grounds. In the evening, we were entertained by a local band called the Mayreau Sunshine Band. After dinner, we hiked up through town again for the local culture tour, and although it was our third visit to the island, it was the first time we had spent the evening hours on Mayreau. At one of the stops we were again entertained by a small steel band. Unfortunately, Beth slipped on the steep road coming back down the hill and skinned up her ankle. It wasn't a major problem for the rest of the trip, but it did continue to cause her some discomfort.
